Commemoration of World Human Rights Day Indicated by the Free Papua Agenda

Commemoration of World Human Rights Day Indicated by the Free Papua Agenda

The commemoration of World Human Rights Day which falls on December 10, 2019 really has the potential to be ridden by the Free Papua Organization (OPM) in the name of a pro-Free Papua group. This moment will automatically be used by OPM to campaign for their independence agenda.

Last year, the pro-independence West Papua National Committee (KNPB) staged an action under the pretext of commemorating World Human Rights Day. In the action that was held on December 10, 2018 in major cities in Papua, the KNPB carried a referendum discourse for Papua.

The commemoration of world human rights day in Papua is often colored by riots triggered by the infiltration of the agenda of the Papuan pro-independence groups.

Human rights issues cannot be arbitrarily claimed by Papuan pro-independence groups. Because the commemoration of world human rights day is a momentum to resolve various allegations of human rights violations and also a commitment to no longer commit human rights violations.

"The issue of human rights is different from the issue of independence or referendum. The issue of human rights is the problem of human rights," said researcher of the Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI), Adrianna Elisabeth.

Adriana added, the fundamental problem in Papua was not about independence. But the matter of education and health is not evenly distributed. Then there is also security stability and human rights issues.

"If this is resolved, it has nothing to do with independence. If human rights can be resolved, then there is no need for a referendum either," he concluded.
