Poverty rates in Papua are declining

In general, the March 2012-September 2019 poverty rate in Papua has decreased both in terms of quantity and percentage.

Head of Social Statistics at the Central Statistics Agency of Papua, Bagas Susilo, in Jayapura, Wednesday (1/15/2020), said that the percentage of poor people in the period decreased by 4.56 percentage points, from 31.11 percent or 920.52 thousand inhabitants in March 2012 to 26.55 percent or 900.95 thousand in September 2019.

"The percentage of poor people in Papua over the past six months has also decreased by 0.98 percentage points, from 27.53 percent in March 2019 to 26.55 percent in September 2019," he said. "Different again when compared to September 2018, there was a decrease of 0.88 percentage points," he continued.

If you look at the types of regions, it is clear, the poor population in Papua is concentrated in rural areas, where in September 2019 there were 857.02 thousand people or 35.36 percent of the poor living in the area.

Provinces in Eastern Indonesia namely Papua, West Papua and East Nusa Tenggara are the regions with the highest percentage of poor population, respectively 26.55 percent, 21.51 percent and 20.62 percent.

"While 3 (three) provinces with the lowest percentage of poor population were in DKI Jakarta Province at 3.42 percent, followed by Bali at 3.61 percent and South Kalimantan with a percentage of poor population at 4.47 percent," he said.

Separately, Assistant for the Economy and Papuan People's Welfare Muhammad Musa'ad, said to reduce poverty in the Earth Cenderawasih is not enough just to make programs and activities.

"The reduction in poverty in Papua cannot only be done by making programs but must be supported by a budget," Musa'd said.
