The Nabire Maritime and Fisheries Office (DKP) intensified the socialization of sea turtles conservation. The socialization focused on the collaboration of village regulations with conservation efforts.
.
"We are focusing this year on socialization to the community. We will invite the people of Kampung Makimi and the surrounding areas, "said Head of the Conservation and Rehabilitation Section of Fisheries Resources DKP Nabire Marry Hartini Lidan.
.
DKP Nabire considers that the residents of Kampung Makimi and the surrounding area still need to be given an understanding of the importance of preserving sea turtles and the marine ecosystem. Socialization has long been scheduled, but it can only be done now.
.
"There are budget constraints. "It has been almost two years since the release of sea turtles in Makimi (it can only be carried out with socialization)," Lidan said. He claimed funding was a major problem in conserving the habitat and turtle population in Makimi Village. Community understanding of this issue also needs to be strengthened.
.
"There are still many predators that damage the nest and take turtle eggs. Predators include humans. They not only take eggs, but also often with their mother (turtle), "explained Lidan.
.
The Makimi Coastal Area in Makimi District is the only sea turtle habitat in Nabire. slowly, understanding about sea turtle conservation began to grow in some communities there. They formed a team to support efforts to conserve these endangered and protected animals.
.
"In the past, every time we met turtle eggs we would definitely take and sell. However, gradually, I was interested and followed the advice of the Dinas (DKP Nabire), and joined a conservation group, "said Makimi Kampung Turtle Conservation Group Chairman Antonius Yoweni, when contacted by telephone.
.
He admitted that the views of some local residents about the existence of sea turtles also began to change, in line with the approach by DKire Nabire. They are now jointly taking care of turtle breeding in Kampong Makimi.
