The Government Must Be Firm To Establish OPM As A Banned Organization

The Government Must Be Firm To Establish OPM As A Banned Organization

Throughout 2019, the Free Papua Movement (OPM) has repeatedly carried out acts of terror, deterrence and shootings to the community and the military / police in Papua. These acts of deterrence and shooting are a form of the national liberation war for West Papua's independence.

The various acts of terror and shootings carried out by TPNPB-OPM actually show the identity of OPM as a brutal and inhumane organization on behalf of the interests of the people of Papua in its various actions. The government needs to go further than just placing TNI / Polri personnel in the Papua region to maintain Papuan security. But the Government must establish OPM as a banned organization.

In the legal perspective, if an organization is defined as a prohibited organization, there is a clear legal consequence that the organization may no longer carry out any activities either openly or in secret. In the social perspective, the designation of an organization as a prohibited organization has an extraordinary social impact for the members of the organization because it has the potential to be ostracized by the community if it does not immediately leave the banned organization and restates its loyalty to the Republic of Indonesia.

By being declared a prohibited organization, the public perception will automatically form that the organization is a dangerous organization so that social awareness will be formed towards the organization and its members.

In the eyes of defense and security, the designation of an organization as a prohibited organization gives greater power to the TNI / Polri to take legal action because it already has a clear basis. Even more so if the organization is separatist and commits terror against Apkam himself as did the OPM in Papua. OPM attacks on the community and TNI / Polri will continue to occur in Papua as long as the Government does not act decisively to establish OPM as a banned organization.
