The Mimika Regency Government (Pemkab), Papua Province this year will increase the installation of CCTV cameras on a number of main roads in the city of Timika, especially at points deemed prone to street crimes such as begal, snatching, motor vehicle theft, and others.

Mimika Deputy Regent Johannes Rettob, in Timika, Sunday, said that in 2019 the Mimika Communication and Information Service had installed 10 CCTV cameras on several main roads in Timika City.

The installed CCTV camera was directly connected to the Mimika Regency Command Center data center located in the Karang Senang Village SP3 Headquarters, Kuala Kencana District.

The Mimika Regency Government Command Center facility will also be connected to the Mimika Police Resort data center to monitor perpetrators of crimes on the highway. According to the Mimika Diskominfo plan, 20 new CCTV cameras will be installed in 2020 in Timika City.

"We really plan to increase the number of CCTV cameras installed on various main roads in the city of Timika, especially in areas that have been prone to crime. Through the provision of these facilities, it is hoped that this will help the police quickly uncover the perpetrators of crimes that are increasingly disturbing the public. Street crime cases such as begal, snatching, motor vehicle theft, and theft with violence have been rife in Timika in recent times. Most recently, a woman was targeted when she walked out of the Unor Mart shopping center on Jalan Budi Utomo, Timika on Sunday night.

The case was instantly viral on social media due to the actions of the perpetrators captured by a CCTV camera. The case of snatching also occurred on Jalan Cenderawasih, right in front of the Mimika Regional Government Housing Complex and in the ex-Timika Swadaya Market area on Saturday (1/25).

Mimika Police Chief Adjunct Senior Commissioner I Gusti Gede Era Adhinata responded to the case, had ordered his staff to look for the perpetrators of the snatch and begal until dragged to legal proceedings.
