Some Elements of Community Call Together to Maintain Peace in the Land of Papua

A number of elements of the Papuan community in Jakarta held a peaceful action to jointly maintain a peaceful Papua. They asked the government to take firm action against groups that would hold an OPM Anniversary.

The masses who are members of the 'Papuan People Love the Unitary Republic of Indonesia' expressly reject the celebration of the Anniversary of the Free Papua Organization (HUT OPM) which falls on 1 December.

The rejection was voiced when holding a demonstration in front of the Office of the Coordinating Ministry for Politics and Security, Central Jakarta, Friday (11/29/2019).

"Inviting all elements of the Papuan people in particular and generally the Indonesian people to reject the OPM Anniversary on December 1," said Action Coordinator Jefri Tenus in his statement.

Monitoring on location, the masses were seen carrying banners reading 'Peaceful Peace Together with Indonesia', 'Rejecting the Propaganda of the OPM', 'Papuan People Love the Unitary Republic of Indonesia'. The masses also appear to have the unique Papuan attributes carrying the red and white flags in their action.

"We ask the Coordinating Minister and his staff, the TNI and the National Police to secure Papua on December 1. The point is that there should be no more violence, like last September and August such as arson and murder," said one of the action leaders, Jhon Numeri.

According to Jefri, the OPM is only a handful of people who claim to be Papua, but are actually being used by other people or people with foreign interests and demand separation from the Republic of Indonesia.

"Therefore, we still must unite to protect the country and not be afraid of anyone who wants to tear apart the unity of the Indonesian people. Because protecting Papua is protecting Indonesia," he said.
