Police Arrest People Suspected of Mass Gathering Ahead of OPM Anniversary

Papua Regional Police continues to prepare for security ahead of the anniversary of the Free Papua Organization (OPM) which falls on 1 December. The Papua Regional Police banned mass mobilization at Trikora Square to commemorate Papuan independence.
.
"We still reject it. In principle, we do not allow peaceful demonstrations, worship, or that are as a trigger for them to carry out these actions," said Papua Police Chief Inspector General Paulus Waterpauw Papua in Jayapura, Tuesday (26/11).

.
"Because we know, from among the lives of the people here, there are certain groups that always take advantage of the spaces, or the opportunity to clash the authorities with the community," he added.
.
In addition, Paulus said that his party had also secured two people suspected of provoking residents by distributing leaflets related to Papuan independence. They spread the information both through social media and leaflets.
.
"At this time we have already conducted an examination of two persons who provoked or disseminated information to mobilize the masses associated with December 1," Paulus said.
.
Meanwhile in West Papua, a joint police patrol arrested eight civilians in Manokwari West Papua, for allegedly being involved in celebrating the 22nd anniversary of the Republic of Papua New Guinea. The patrol team also seized 29 large Morning Star flags along with a number of posters depicting the country's president along with a number of pamphlets.
.
West Papua Regional Police Chief, Brig. Gen. Herry Rudolf Nahak, said the arrest of eight civilians in Manokwari was Wednesday morning at around 03.48 East Indonesian Time by a local police patrol. The eight people are, BP, AM, FN, JI, SI, FA, NK, and SM. "From the results of the initial examination, the eight residents claimed to have just joined in because they received leaflets of call to action centered on the Manokwari Borasi field, on November 27, 2019," Herry said.
.
The police, said Herry, will investigate intellectual actors who deliberately manipulate residents from the mountains of West Papua to participate in these activities.
.
"On average those arrested do not know the legal impact of their actions," Herry said while reviewing the initial inspection process at the Manokwari Police Headquarters. They were only invited by the person mentioned when distributing leaflets in their neighborhood.
.
The police think the eight residents carried the Morning Star flag to celebrate the 22nd day of independence of the Republic of Papua New Guinea. Police have also detected illegal activities through leaflets distributed in a number of cities in West Papua.
.
Head of Papua Police Public Relations Commissioner AM Kamal Pol also asked residents to move as usual. Including worship at church.
.
"With the presence of police and military personnel around the community, the community is increasingly convinced that December, January will be more conducive in the future," said Head of Papua Police Public Relations Commissioner AK Kamal Pol in the Skouw region, Indonesia-Papua New Guinea border, Wednesday (11/27) .
