Mahfud MD: New Zealand Supports Part of Papua in Indonesia

4 New Zealand Member of Parliament visited the Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Mahfud Md. Their arrival was accompanied by the Indonesian Ambassador to New Zealand Tantowi Yahya. Mahfud with four New Zealand lawmakers discussed a number of issues ranging from Papua to the Human Rights (HAM) case in Indonesia.

The four New Zealand lawmakers are Kanwaljit Singh, Melissa Lee, Gregg O'Connor and Tim McIndoe. Tantowi said that the member of parliament was traveling to Indonesia in order to make friends.

Tantowi said the meeting discussed a number of issues regarding politics and law. The issue of Papua and Indonesia's commitment to solving past human rights cases were also discussed.

"The issue discussed with the Coordinating Minister for Politics and Security is about issues around politics and law as the domain of the Minister of Politics and Security. Then specifically also discussed the problem of Papua and Indonesia's commitment to resolve various kinds of past human rights issues," he said.

Meanwhile Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Mahfud MD stated that New Zealand fully supports Papua as part of Indonesia. According to him, New Zealand's support is needed politically internationally.

"(New Zealand) strongly supports integration or the territorial integrity of Indonesia, including strongly supporting the question of Papua as part of Indonesia," Mahfud said after meeting a number of New Zealand lawmakers at the Office of the Coordinating Ministry for Politics and Security, Jakarta, Tuesday (11/19).

Mahfud said that New Zealand's attitude towards the territorial sovereignty of Indonesia was in line with international law. He conveyed that international law had declared Papua part of the Homeland.

In fact, Mahfud conveyed the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), which states that territories that are already part of a legal state must be defended in any way.
